What if Doctor Who Wasn't Axed?

The following article is written from an In Universe perspective.

Albert "Bertie" Reynolds was an Erstden scientist from the 33rd Century and he was a companion of the Fifteenth Doctor and Sixteenth Doctor.

    Biography

    Gaian Invasion

In 3277, Bertie's planet, Erstden was invaded by the Gaians, and this was his first exposure to any other alien race. He was Erstden's leading scientific expert, and as such, the Gaians kidnapped him and, at gunpoint, forced him to work with them on their scientific projects.

It was at the time of the invasion that Bertie last saw his 20-year old daughter, who for several years, Bertie assumed to be dead.

Over the years, the Gaians forced Bertie to work on several projects, but none were as terrifying as when in 3283, the Gaians begun work on The Doomsday Cannon a device which would, in theory, destroy an entire planet, and they instructed Bertie to make it work. Meeting the Doctor

In 3289, Bertie had just completed work on The Doomsday Cannon and had, some time ago, learnt that his daughter was still alive and running the resistance on Erstden. However, a Gaian taskforce had discovered that the ice on the planet had become extremely, and for seemingly unknown reasons, very dangerous, causing flesh to be destroyed at a single touch. Upon investigation of the matter, Bertie conducted several experiments, eventually heating up the ice, turning it into water, and seeming to nullify its parasitic effects. However, upon the arrival of Meena Patel, and her warship, a skirmish broke out between the Gaians and the resistance, resulting in one of the resistance members touching the water and transforming into a crackled creature absorbed by the water and infecting everyone and anyone who got in its path.

After Patel ordered Bertie worked with one of her scientists, the Doctor, to find an antidote, she and Bertie worked for several hours, all the while the parasitic creatures continued infecting more and more people, running down the clock. Patel told the two of them that if a cure was not found, she was to use the secret weapon, the Doomsday Cannon, which was being built on Erstden, to blow up the planet, which would, as an added bonus for Patel, get rid of the resistance too. After failing to make an antidote, despite the Flood infecting more and more people, shortening the amount of time they had, they took the decision to begin an evacuation of Gaian officers, in preparation to destroy the planet and the Flood with it. During this time, Bertie admitted that his daughter, Sam, was the leader of the resistance, as he pleaded for the Doctor to save her, before the Doctor also admitted that she was a spy, working for the resistance and that she had come to know Sam, very well.

Upon returning to the Gaian ship and finding Meena Patel dead, at the hands of the Flood and Sam, the Doctor and Bertie decided to also evacuate everyone else onto the TARDIS, as Bertie prepared to use the cannon. However, in the control room, through the window, Bertie saw Sam outside, and ran out to her, abandoning the cannon, and putting the survivors in direct danger. But, after at last getting to Sam, a strange vessel materialised around Bertie and her, piloted by the Doctor, which she explained to be her spaceship, called the TARDIS. They soon rushed back into the control room, whereby the Doctor activated the cannon, destroying Erstden. After dropping off the survivors on a planet 200 light-years away, for their own safety, the Doctor offered Bertie the chance to travel with her in the TARDIS, to which he initially refused, but after finding out it was a time machine, his curiosity as a scientist encouraged him to take the decision to join the Doctor, onboard.
