The following article is written from an Out of Universe perspective.

Season 2 of The Elysium was broadcast in September 2016, following the end of Season 50 of Doctor Who.

    Overview

    Renewal for Season 2

The Elysium was renewed for a second season, surprisingly late by the BBC, as while the viewing figures were strong, the reception to Season 1, critically, was mixed, especially in the UK.

Many critics called on the series to be harder-hitting but to also make it's connection to Doctor Who more obvious. Eventually, in August 2015, the show was greenlit for a second season, which had the knock-on effect of Season 2 airing in September instead of May, like planned.

    Creative Team

Due to the late renewal, many members of the creative team, most notably Andy Harries and Jim Kohlberg, were no longer available to work on the Elysium, while Matthew B. Roberts, on the other hand, found that he'd rather spend more time working on Doctor Who, especially as production for Season 50 was wrapping and very early pre-production for Season 51 was starting to begin.

With only Anne Kenney staying, Espenson hired renowned screenwriters Simon Ashdown, known for hard-hitting dramas and character pieces, as well as Adrian Hodges, who was a BAFTA Award-winning screenwriter, who was well known for writing multiple prestigious BBC Dramas. Espenson also hired Emer Kenny, who played former Doctor Who companion, and occasional guest star, Gemma Legato, who herself was also a writer.

    Production

Filming for the Elysium Season 2 began in January 2016 and wrapped in June, lasting just under six months. The series was once again produced by Left Bank Productions and shot at Wardpark Film and Television Studios in North Lanarkshire, Scotland.

    Storytelling Concept

Espenson and Moore were keen to mix up the Elysium a bit, especially in light of some of its reception, and in turn, came up with a narrative device to tell the seasons story around. They came up with the idea of doing an episode based upon each character's story, instead of splitting the plotlines amongst each episode, sparingly, they'd all be in one.

After some deliberation, it was decided that Episode 1 would focus on Julie and Calem and the political angle of the season, Episode 2 would focus on Richard and Syd with the Rhaighrs, Episode 3 would focus on Eddie at Callista Daily, investigating something important, Episode 4 would focus on Lea and the Cizzaurans, Episode 5 would focus on the Three and give the audience a bit more information about them, and then Episode 6 would tie everything together and be structured more like a Season 1 episode.

It was also suggested that all of these plotlines take place over just one day, at the same time, parallel to each other, and therefore characters could frequently jump into other episodes, for a scene or two, and the audience sees the same scene but from their perspective.

    Broadcast

The Elysium: Season 2 was eventually broadcast from 11 September to 16 October in the UK, with CBS broadcasting it later that evening, and Netflix releasing each episode, week by week, internationally, the following morning.
