Season 5 was the final season of The Elysium and it was broadcast in during the Autumn of 2019.
Overview
Renewal for Season 5
The Elysium was renewed for a fifth season during the broadcast of Season 4. However, franchise executive, Jane Espenson had decided that the fifth season should be it's last, While Toni Graphia disagreed and thought the show needed a total of at least six or seven seasons. To compensate this, the show was given sixteen episodes instead of twelve.
Creative Team
Jane Espenson and Toni Graphia would stay on as executive producers and co-showrunners, however Espenson was not all that involved during the production and left it mainly up to Graphia as Espenson was trying to start up both the Sixteenth Doctor's run on Doctor Who as well as set up the new show, Doctor Who: The New Renegade.
The co-executive producers would go under some changes, Simon Ashdown departed as a co-exe but did return to pen episode 12, Anne Kenney, Doug Petrie and Scott Reynolds would all remain as co-exes and Jonathan Wilson would join the team of co-exe's after his work in the script room for both The Elysium and Left Bank Pictures other hit project, The Crown.
Martin Harrison would depart as a producer, but Shaina Fewell and Michael Wilson would remain as producers, joining them would be former Doctor Who producer, Nikki Wilson and former The Crown producer, Eve Swannell.
Production
Filming began on The Elysium in January and finished in late August with the show being produced by Left Bank Pictures and being filmed at once again, Wardpark Film and Television Studios in North Lanarkshire, Scotland.
Storytelling Concept
Due to it being the final season of the show, Graphia made the decision to wrap up all character arcs and tie them into both high scale sci-fi stories as well as low key character stories.
Broadcast
Season 5 was broadcasted between the 1st of September 2019 to the 15th of December 2019 on BBC One, CBS, and Netflix releasing the episodes internationally the next day.
