The Hail Mary was the first story of Season 35 of Doctor Who. It was written by Steven Moffat, directed by Sandy Johnson and featured Michael French as the Doctor and Laurie Holden as Sammy Thompson.
This is the first story for Sammy Thompson and the first under the Paramount Deal.
Synopsis
Arriving from the New World, young American adventurer, Sammy Thompson, finds herself in the Scottish Highlands. However, her timing isn’t that great, as it’s the eve of one of the bloodiest battles in Scottish history, the Battle of Culloden. Fearing for Sammy’s life, the Doctor seeks to interfere, knowing that this is the last place she should be. But a greater intelligence is at work, and the Doctor must stop it.

Story Notes
- This story is the first to feature episodes 45 minutes in length since (DW: Revelation of the Daleks).
- This is the first Doctor Who story on television not to be made and broadcast in the 4:3 aspect ratio, but instead in 16:9 widescreen. However, it would be shown in 14:9 on a 4:3 analogue set.
- This is the first story produced by Susan Belbin and script edited by Steven Moffat, as well as the first for David Renwick as showrunner and executive producer.
- This is the first story for a script editor, where their first story in the role is one they have also written. This would occur again for Paul Cornell in (DW: The Winner's Protector), albeit co-written with Russell T Davies.
- This story is the first to be repeated on BBC Choice (later BBC Three from 2003) the following evening after broadcast. This would continue until 2016 when BBC Three moved online.
