    The Martian Equinox was a serial consisting of the Doctor Who Christmas and New Years specials for the 2017 festive season. It was written by Ronald D. Moore, directed by Daniel O'Hara and featured Adjoa Andoh as the Fifteenth Doctor and special guest star, Pierce Brosnan as Daniel Bevin.

    Synopsis 

    After a devastating attack on Earth's Martian Colony, the Doctor is enlisted to get to the bottom of this and try and broker peace between the two races which currently inhabit the planet. But, things can never be simple when the Master is involved...

    • This story was broadcast over the festive period in 2017, but unlike previous Christmas specials, this was a two-part serial, and the BBC chose to put the second part on New Years Day, with the show in two very highly sought-after spots in the BBC One schedule.
    • The BBC heavily promoted this story, especially due to Pierce Brosnan's casting in it, with special trailers with Adjoa Andoh and Pierce Brosnan both appearing in character, telling the audience who they are.
    • A poster was released in early November to promote the upcoming adventure, which went onto be used on billboards, online adverts as well as the standard DVD release of this serial.

    Reaction

    • Part One received a 7-Day Viewing Figure from BARB of 8.23 million viewers. It ranked at 5th over the week, which changed to 4th when the 28-Day Figures came out, putting the episode at 8.97 million viewers.
    • Part Two received a 7-Day Viewing Figure from BARB of 7.82 million viewers. It ranked at 7th over the week, which changed to 3rd when the 28-Day Figures came out, putting the episode at 8.54 million viewers.
