Development

A sixth movie was in the works following the season prior to Samantha Bond announcing her departure as well as keeping with the continuity first placed with the first movie in 2003 from the Tenth Doctor onwards although it had started to be passed around by Paramount under the title 'Doctor Who VI' since the release of the fifth movie. However, it had undergone development hell by the time Season 50 was in production, and with the sudden exit of Bond, it was eventually decided by CBS to showrunner Ronald D. Moore for the Doctor to regenerate in the TV series. The planned sixth movie was put on the back burner for a later date.
Initially, the first part was to end on a cliffhanger by not showing the Fifteenth Doctor until the next episode. Following the unexpected decision to make the Doctor regenerate in the story, the BBC wanted to promote episode 16 as Adjoa Andoh's first episode as the Doctor.

Reaction

Part I received a 7-Day Viewing Figure from BARB of 8.25 million viewers. It ranked at 3rd over the week, which changed to 4th when the 28-Day Figures came out, putting the episode at 8.81 million viewers.

Part II received a 7-Day Viewing Figure from BARB of 10.21 million viewers. It ranked at 1st over the week, which changed to 1st when the 28-Day Figures came out, putting the episode at 10.87 million viewers.

Story Notes

This story marks the first time that the Doctor regenerated in the main TV series since the Ninth Doctor in Season 37's The Chimes of Midnight from 2000.
The story title is based on the First Doctor's regeneration story, The Tenth Planet which also featured the Cybermen.
