The following article is written from an Out of Universe perspective. |
Series 1 of Panopticon premiered in February 2008. The series was the first of the spinoff series Panopticon and it followed on from the events of Doctor Who: Revelation on Gallifrey.
Overview
Origins
With the Gallifrey Arc ending on Doctor Who, with the introduction of the Twelfth Doctor, producer, Tony Redston expressed his desire to continue on the story of Gallifrey in a potential spinoff. Together with Ira Steven Behr, Gary Russell and Marc Platt, he created the concept for a series entitled "Gallifrey".
The series was supposed to follow on from Revelation, with the Rogue taking over as Lord President of Gallifrey, and the show would follow the tribulations in that role, but with an anti-hero as the lead, which allowed the show a much larger scope than they had on Doctor Who.
Tony Redston left the development of the show in late-2006, putting Marc Platt in place as showrunner. Platt came up with the character of Will Adams, who's perspective the show would be told from, him being a human abducted by the Rogue, and therefore he could take the companion type roll in the story, being the audience's easily identifier.
Just before the show entered production, in summer 2007, the shows name was changed from "Gallifrey" to "Panopticon".
Creatives
With Marc Platt as showrunner, his official title was Script Editor. Gary Russell, Paul Cornell, Ira Steven Behr, and Julie Gardner would serve as the Executive Producers for the show, and Platt hired Jane Espenson, Nicholas Briggs, David Bishop, and Robert Hewitt Wolfe to act as Co-Executive Producers on the show.
Cast Members
The cast for the first series would feature returning players from Seasons 41 - 43. The Rogue, The Rani, Leela, Francis, Ohila, Orthena, Fen Do'nel, Francs, and K-9, with the final member of the main cast being Will Adams, a new character who was created solely for Panopticon.
