The following article is written from an Out of Universe perspective.

The Hail Mary was the first story of Season 35 of Doctor Who. It was written by Steven Moffat, directed by Sandy Johnson and featured Paul McGann as the Doctor and Laurie Holden as Sammy Thompson.

     Synopsis

Arriving from the New World, young American adventurer, Sammy Thompson, finds herself in the Scottish Highlands. However, her timing isn’t that great, as it’s the eve of one of the bloodiest battles in Scottish history, the Battle of Culloden. Fearing for Sammy’s life, the Doctor seeks to interfere, knowing that this is the last place she should be. But a greater intelligence is at work, and the Doctor must stop it.
