=== New logo and theme tune === |
|||
Although the show largely looked the same, Garwood put in place a new logo; borrowing the 'connecting logo' from 1980-86 but done in a more unique way. Synthesis musician Jean Michele Jare composed the new theme tune, to place it a step into the 90s despite sounding very 80s. The titles were also tweaked to remove the Doctor's wink and include the new logo along with the new theme, which was structured in almost the same way as the previous Keff McCullough theme did. |

The following article is written from an Out of Universe perspective. |
Season 27 of Doctor Who premiered in the Autumn of 1990, and ran from September until December.
The season was the final season for both Sylvester McCoy and Sophie Aldred, and introduced, not just, new companions, Katie Tollinger (Julia Sawalha) and Henrick (John Banks), but also, the Eighth Doctor, Richard Griffiths, in the final moments of its last episode.
Stephen Garwood and Ben Aaronovitch, took over control of the series, as Producer and Script editor respectively.
Overview
Departure
In December 1989 after Season 26 finished airing, producer John Nathan-Turner and script editor Andrew Cartmel announced their departures from the show in Season 27, with Sylvester McCoy and Sophie Aldred also announcing their departures after the following season.
The new companion
Early on, ann outline was put in place for the new companion to replace Ace. The idea was that the new companion would go by the name of Katie Tollinger, a posh upper class cat burglar. Julia Sawalha was cast for the role.
In late 1989, Cartmel commissioned the four stories; all of which were the stories to be featured in the season. They included the likes of: the Doctor and Ace in different manners, the return of the Ice Warriors, a masterplan from the Doctor and a regeneration story featuring UNIT.
Another new companion
A later addition to the season would be a story arc spanning throughout the season in all four stories; that being a character that has appeared in all stories (except the Doctor) but as different characters. The last story reveals that it is Henrick who was experimented onto the project across time and space. He joins the TARDIS team at the end of the season and into the next along with a new Doctor...
What almost happened
BBC1 controller Jonathan Powell almost decided to axe the show after Season 26. However, Alan Yentob, brought the show to BBC2 and to Saturday nights again for the first time in over three years to prevent the cancellation, given that he was one of the few people that had interest in the show at that point.
